Abaday Bats For Ordinance Protecting Lady Salesclerksby Lorebeth C. Requiroso/city Council Office
COUNCILOR Roger Abaday this morning called for the enactment of a law that will protect women employed in the different department stores, malls and restaurants in the city.
In his special report during the City Council regular session presided over by Councilor President Eleipe, the councilor said he has received several complaints regarding this."They are working eight to 10 hours a day, made to stand and roam around without providing proper place for rest or seat for them to rest while waiting for customers," he said.Councilor Abaday said the Labor Code mandates the establishment of standards to ensure the welfare and the health of women. He added that the Philippine Constitution also requires the state to protect the maternal functions of women and provide facilities to enhance their welfare so that they will realize their fullest potentials in nation building."This is all about protection of working women," he pointed out adding that because of their fragile physical condition and their maternal function, their protection is provided for by law.Councilor Abaday said that Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu have already enacted legislations in line with this. As this developed, Councilor President Elipe referred the report to the committees on women and on labor chaired by Councilors MaryCor Calizo and Alexander Dacer, respectively.Councilor Elipe said all pertinent laws should be harmonized so that a good legislation can be drafted.
