Trade fair nets P26-M sales
By: Penny Lyn P. Cunanan, Business World

CAGAYAN DE ORO - The four-day Kahimunan Mindanao Island Fair held here in the last week of August posted P26.45 million in total sales, about 32% more than the original target figure of P20 million, organizers told local media.

The success of the trade fair was attributed to the One-Town One-Product (OTOP) program implemented by local government units, which produce low-cost but high-quality products from many parts of the island.

A total of 123 exhibitors from all over Mindanao show-cased assorted locally produced items at the trade fair held at the Atrium of Lim Ket Kai Center.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez (2nd district) stressed that due to the trade fair's success, his district will launch a smaller scale One Barangay-One Product program among his constituents in order to promote entrepreneurship and employment.

Central Mindanao topped the list of participating regions with P10.8 million, or 41% of the total sales. Northern Mindanao was second with P7.96 million, or 30% of the total. Caraga Region had P6.55 million, 25%.

Overall, the Caraga exhibitors displayed the best products in food items, fashion accessories, gifts, toys wares, and wooden furniture, organizers said.

Highlighted products of the fair that contributed 61.89% of the overall sales were T'nalak cloth, handmade paper, and sinamay-based handicraft. Tuna products and processed meat had a share of 35.72% of the total sales.
